Are there any good websites for learning british sign language for free?
so far the only site i can find is britishsignlanguage.com
http://www.british-sign.co.uk/ has fingerspelling, but very few sites have good resources for learning full words I’m afraid. I’m learning sign language, and I know my teacher is downloading sheets from somewhere, but I think she’s paying. Youtube might be useful-have a search for “BSL (word you want here)”.
It’s a shame resources aren’t more readily available!

Sign Of The Cross $10.09 Be careful what you wish for, his mother used to say. Yet how many times, in his twenty years defending the underclass, has Monty Collins wished for a client who is intelligent, articulate and tattoo-free? Now he has one, but it’s not long before his mother’s warning comes back to haunt him. Father Brennan Burke was born in Ireland, raised in New York, educated in Rome – he’s equally fluent in Latin and the language of the street. And he is the prime suspect in the killing of a foxy young girl whose body was found carved with a religious sign, a sign that points straight to the priest. From their first meeting, Monty finds Burke acerbic, arrogant, and evasive about his relationship with the victim. Conflict between lawyer and client simmers all through the ordeal that lies ahead, as evidence piles up and murder charges seem inevitable. With Burke remaining tight-lipped about his past, Monty has no choice but to go behind his back and conduct a probe into the life of his own client. Never in his career has Monty been so lost for answers, until a long-forgotten incident takes on new and ominous meaning . . . |

The Gift of the Stranger: Faith, Hospitality, and Foreign Language Learning $24 “A pioneering look at the implications of Christian faith for foreign language education. It has become clear in recent years that reflection on foreign language education involves more than questioning which methods work best. This new volume carries current discussions of the value-laden nature of foreign language teaching into new territory by exploring its spiritual and moral dimensions. David Smith and Barbara Carvill show how the Christian faith sheds light on the history, aims, content, and methods of foreign language education. The Neurobiology of Learning: Perspectives From Second Language Acquisition $27.69 This book constitutes a timely contribution to the existing literature by presenting a relatively comprehensive, neurobiological account of certain aspects of second language acquisition. It represents the collaborative efforts of members of the Neurobiology of Language Research Group in the Applied Linguistics and TESL Department at UCLA. Members of the group are trained in neurobiology and then use this knowledge to develop biological accounts of various aspects of applied linguistics. The volume avoids the corticocentric bias that characterizes many brain-language publications–both cortical and subcortical structures receive their appropriate attention. In addition, it demonstrates that enough is presently known about the brain to inform our conceptualizations of how humans acquire second languages, thus, it provides a refreshingly novel, highly integrative contribution to the (second) language acquisition literature. The goal of the research program was based on the need to draw more links between the neurobiological mechanisms and second language acquisition. As such, the book promotes a neurobiology of language that starts with the brain and moves to behavior. The fundamental insights presented should guide second language acquisition researchers for years to come. |

The God Who Speaks: Learning the Language of God $22 “As Christians we believe that God speaks – that God has spoken to people down through the centuries and still speaks to us today. But just how does God speak to us? Has his speech changed over time? And how do we “hear” the voice of God? In this insightful book Ben Campbell Johnson explores the subject of divine speech, highlighting its importance to faith and leading Christian believers into the practice of listening for God’s voice in daily life. Johnson first explores the biblical foundations of divine communication, tracing the ways that God has spoken to humankind from the calling of Abraham, to the appearance of Jesus, to the continuing work of the Spirit in the early church. He then gleans important lessons about God’s language from a wide range of Christian figures throughout history – Polycarp, Julian of Norwich, Teresa of vila, Henri Nouwen, and others. As this historical record shows, God communicates with us in a variety of ways. In exploring these different modes of “GodSpeech,” Johnson deftly guides readers into the practice of “intensive listening,” a way of posing issues to God and discerning his response. Numerous anecdotes illuminate Johnson’s discussion, and each chapter ends with questions for reflection and discussion as well as suggestions for journaling. Johnson concludes the book by recounting a number of personal experiences that vividly illustrate the value of learning to listen to God’s voice. At a time when many Christians hunger for a more personal, meaningful connection with God, this book shows readers how to discern divine language and forge a closer, richer relationship with “the God who speaks.”" |

Fate Time And Language: An Essay On Free Will $12.79 Long before he probed the workings of time human choice and human frailty in Infinite Jest David Foster Wallace wrote a brilliant philosophical critique of Richard Taylor's argument for fatalism. In 1962 Taylor used six commonly accepted presuppositions to imply that humans have no control over the future. Not only did Wallace take issue with Taylor's method which according to him scrambled the relations of logic language and the physical world but he also called out a semantic trick at the heart of Taylor's argument. Wallace was a great skeptic of abstract thinking made to function as a negation of something more genuine and real. He was especially suspicious of certain paradigms of thought-the cerebral aestheticism of modernism the clever gimmickry of postmodernism-that abandoned "the very old traditional human verities that have to do with spirituality and emotion and community." As Wallace rises to meet the challenge to free will presented by Taylor (and a number of other philosophical heavyweights) we experience the developing perspective of this major novelist along with the beginning of his lifelong struggle to establish solid logical ground for his soaring convictions. This volume reproduces Taylor's original article and other works on fatalism cited by Wallace in his critique. James Ryerson an editor at the New York Times Magazine draws parallels in his introduction between Wallace's early work in philosophy and the themes and explorations of his fiction. A companion website will feature interviews with philosophers and avid Wallace fans on the import of his arguments. |

Learning Java $16.47 <p>Version 5.0 of the Java 2 Standard Edition SDK is the most important upgrade since Java first appeared a decade ago. With Java 5.0, you’ll not only find substantial changes in the platform, but to the language itself-something that developers of Java took five years to complete. The main goal of Java 5.0 is to make it easier for you to develop safe, powerful code, but none of these improvements makes Java any easier to learn, even if you’ve programmed with Java for years. And that means our bestselling hands-on tutorial takes on even greater significance.<br/><br/><i>Learning Java</i> is the most widely sought introduction to the programming language that’s changed the way we think about computing. Our updated third edition takes an objective, no-nonsense approach to the new features in Java 5.0, some of which are drastically different from the way things were done in any previous versions. The most essential change is the addition of "generics", a feature that allows developers to write, test, and deploy code once, and then reuse the code again and again for different data types. The beauty of generics is that more problems will be caught during development, and <i>Learning Java</i> will show you exactly how it’s done.<br/><br/> Java 5.0 also adds more than 1,000 new classes to the Java library. That means 1,000 new things you can do without having to program it in yourself. That’s a huge change. With our book’s practical examples, you’ll come up to speed quickly on this and other new features such as loops and threads. The new edition also includes an introduction to Eclipse, the open source IDE that is growing in popularity. <br/><br/><i>Learning Java</i>, 3rd Edition addresses all of the important uses of Java, such as web applications, servlets, and XML that are increasingly driving enterprise applications.</p> |

Learning Ruby $21.89 <div><p>You don’t have to know everything about a car to drive one, and you don’t need to know everything about Ruby to start programming with it. Written for both experienced and new programmers alike, <em>Learning Ruby</em> is a just-get-in-and-drive book — a hands-on tutorial that offers lots of Ruby programs and lets you know how and why they work, just enough to get you rolling down the road.<br/><br/> Interest in Ruby stems from the popularity of Rails, the web development framework that’s attracting new devotees and refugees from Java and PHP.
