What Is The Best Ways For A Foreigner To Learn Spanish?   by Paul McCrear

What Is The Best Ways For A Foreigner To Learn Spanish?

People looking to pick up another language are always wondering what the Best Way To Learn Spanish is. This can be difficult to answer being that everyone learns differently from one another. Some prefer hearing words while others learn best with visuals and pictures. Regardless, you will find the best way for you to learn Spanish is to surround yourself with the language as much as possible.

There are several ways you can surround yourself with the language without having to study abroad or go live in a Spanish Speaking country. Of course, that is the best way to do so, but not everyone has the money or is willing to actually do such a thing just to Learn A Different Language.

For this reason, you need to start with the little things. Order a subscription to one or two different Spanish magazines that you can read up on. Having them around the house with a dictionary to help you translate words you do not understand can speed up the process. Instead of picking up Sports Illustrated or Better Homes & Garden, you can order Cosmopolitan In Spanish or the Hispanic magazine.

In addition to filling your home with Spanish magazines, watch the Spanish channel for 30 to 60 minutes a day. Just hearing the words can help you understand what is going on and how various words are pronounced. Do not get down on yourself if you are having difficult picking out what is being said as it takes time. But just being around it is extremely beneficial.

Similar to watching the Spanish channel, ordering movies or renting them on Netflix can help with the progression. Find a movie you have seen before in Spanish and match verses you already know with how they are said in Spanish. This is an enjoyable way to pick up the language rather than cramming your brain with note cards.

The last way to learn Spanish by being around it constantly is to listen to audio tapes before you go to bed every night. They can be books on tape or actual lessons that give you a word in English and then say it in Spanish. Regardless, it allows you to take in some Spanish just before dozing off.

By far the best way to learn Spanish is to surround yourself with it as much as possible. You do not have to go to Mexico for a year in order to do this. By renting movies in Spanish, reading Spanish magazines, and listing to audio tapes before going to bed, you will gradually Learn The Language efficiently and fluently.

Music in a Foreign Language

Music in a Foreign Language

$13.58

Lloyd Cole’s seventh official solo album, Music in a Foreign Language, is his most intimate and low-key yet. He retains Dave Derby from the Negatives and calls in former Commotion Neil Clark to play guitar, but mostly the album has the feel of a solo record. Drawing on the same musical palette that his “lost” album Etc. does (acoustic guitars, restrained drums, and subtle instrumentation), this record succeeds in a way that most of his over-produced previous albums fail to do. This is also the first record on which Cole seems resigned to be an adult balladeer; there are no rock tunes to be found. His voice is as deep and rich as ever, and the lack of huge rock drums and loud guitars allows him to forgo the oversinging trap he sometimes falls into. Tracks like “Late Night, Early Town” and “Today I’m Not So Sure” are beautiful, autumnal tracks that soar with sadness. Cole manages to strip down his sound without falling into the trap that many artists do, that of stripping too much away and becoming boring. There are enough bits of sonic imagination to keep the listener awake and admiring Cole’s gentle touch: the strings on “My Other Life,” the rippling guitars of “Cutting Out,” the gauzy pedal steel of “No More Love Songs,” the sweet ba-ba background vocals and bossa nova beat of “Brazil.” His cutting, literate lyrics also keep the listener from becoming complacent; melancholy and bitter, the album sounds like it was written postbreakup and prerecovery. The cover of Nick Cave’s “People Just Ain’t No Good” certainly points toward some lingering bitterness on Cole’s part. Too bad for him, but it makes for good listening for everyone else. Cole is growing old gracefully, much like Roddy Frame or Stephen Duffy. 1980s nostalgia is fun, but some of the guys who were there ended up making some of the best records of their lives in the early 2000s, and Music in a Foreign Language is just that, one of Cole’s best. ~ Tim Sendra, Rovi Performers: Dave Derby – Voices, Guitar (Steel); Lloyd Cole – Guitar, Piano; Lullaby Baxter – Vocals; Neil Clark – Guitar (Electric); Ray Mason – Guitar (Bass)

Ruth Millikan is well known for having developed a strikingly original way for philosophers to seek understanding of mind and language, which she sees as biological phenomena. She now draws together a series of groundbreaking essays which set out her approach to language. Guiding the work of most linguists and philosophers of language today is the assumption that language is governed by prescriptive normative rules. Millikan offers a fundamentally different way of viewing the partial regularities that language displays, comparing them to biological norms that emerge from natural selection. This yields novel and quite radical consequences for our understanding of the nature of public linguistic meaning, the process of language understanding, how children learn language, and the semantics/pragmatics distinction.

This book is a pioneer attempt to bridge the gap between the fields of second language acquisition (SLA) and second and foreign language (L2) writing. Its ultimate aim is to advance our understanding of written language learning by compiling a collection of theoretical meta-reflections and empirical studies that shed new light on two crucial dimensions of the theory and research in the field: first, the manner in which L2 users learn to express themselves in writing (the learning-to-write dimension), and, second, the manner in which the engagement in written output practice can contribute to developing competences in an L2 (the writing-to-learn dimension). These two areas of disciplinary inquiry have up until now developed separately: the learning-to-write dimension has been the cornerstone of L2 writing research, whereas the writing-to-learn one has been theorized and researched within SLA studies, hence the relevance of the book for exploring L2 writing-SLA interfaces.

'The editor and authors in this volume make a convincing case for focusing on advanced foreign language instruction. Importantly, they invite consideration of this focus as an opportunity to re-examine conventional definitions of the target of instruction. In so doing, readers also learn more about the theories highlighted in this volume, and their capacity to enhance our understanding of advancedness and its development within an educational context. This book thus mediates between linguistic and language learning theories and educational practice, modelling the very best of what applied linguistics has to offer.' Diane Larsen-Freeman, Professor of Education, University of Michigan.   The reality of multicultural societies and globalization has increased the demand for language abilities that far exceed those that have typically been associated with communicative competence in a second language. This book examines the acquisition of advanced levels of ability in three parts: theoretical; descriptive; and instructional. It moves beyond the traditional constraints of second language acquisition research by linking systemic functional linguistics and sociocultural theory. The contributors draw primarily on the work of Halliday, Vygotsky and Bakhtin, as well as empirical data from the language classroom, to suggest practical applications towards advanced literacy and linguistic competence. Advanced Language Learning will be of interest to academics researching systemic functional linguistics, second language acquisition and applied linguistics.

Language Acquisition and Language Socialization

Language Acquisition and Language Socialization

$160

‘This is an outstanding collection of papers by top scholars in a range of disciplines who shed stimulating, complementary insights into the social, cognitive and semiotic frameworks that shape both the acquisition of language, and the constitution of social actors through that process. The intentionally loose ecological framing of the volume provides an arena within which a range of perspectives, all united by their opposition to a mechanistic view of language acquisition, can enter into dialogue with each other. This is a most stimulating collection, with a range of insightful investigations of settings as diverse as an autistic child learning to interact with others on the playing field, professional gate-keeping encounters, and foreign language classrooms.’Professor Charles Goodwin, University of California at Los AngelesThe book brings together well-known scholars in two relatively distinct fields, language acquisition and language socialization, and from a variety of orientations within applied linguistics to describe language development from a relational perspective. The papers in this volume are a response to three main questions: 1) What conceptual models best capture the ecological nature of language learning? 2) What research approaches are best likely to illuminate the relationship between language and social structure? 3) How is educational success defined for language acquisition and language socialization?

Diagnosing Foreign Language Proficiency

Diagnosing Foreign Language Proficiency

$150

This book addresses the need for tests that can diagnose the strengths and weaknesses in learners' developing foreign language proficiency. It presents the rationale for, and research surrounding, the development of DIALANG, a suite of internet-delivered diagnostic foreign language tests funded by the European Commission. The word 'diagnosis' is common in discussions in language education and applied linguistics, but very few truly diagnostic tests exist. However, the diagnosis of foreign language proficiency is central to helping learners make progress. This volume explores the nature of diagnostic testing, emphasizing the need for a better understanding of the nature of appropriate diagnosis. The book starts with a debate about how diagnostic testing might most appropriately be developed. Charles Alderson argues that the field has neglected to construct diagnostic tests, partly because other forms of testing have dominated the field. Alderson examines how proficiency has been diagnosed in the key areas of language: reading, listening, writing, grammar and vocabulary. The value of self-assessment is discussed and exemplified as a key component in developing learners', and teachers', awareness of the complexity of language learning. The book ends with a consideration of and recommendations for future developments in the diagnosis of foreign language proficiency.

Foreign Funk

Foreign Funk

$19.18

A couple of things are notable about jazz flutist Keith Marks’ debut album as a leader. First of all, unlike many jazz players, he actually knows what “funk” means — Foreign Funk is sharply (some might say slickly) produced, and benefits nicely from the rock-solid thwock of drummer Wally “Gator” Watson and the highly tasteful electric bass playing of Donald Nicks, whose style comes very much from the funk and soul world more than from straight-ahead jazz. Keyboardist Pete Levin lays fairly low, adding color where needed but otherwise generally leaving plenty of room for the soloist and the rhythm section; guitarist Lou Volpe brings a variety of tones and styles to the session, some of them quite sharp and bluesy. And this brings us to the second noteworthy aspect of this album, which is Marks’ flute playing. Most jazz flutists come to the instrument by way of the saxophone, and their tone (breathy, swinging) shows it. Marks came to jazz by way of classical music, and his tone (round, cultivated) shows it just as clearly. His compositional style sometimes shows it as well; the simple arpeggios that comprise the head to “Patsy,” the equally simple blues outline from which the title track is built — these might be rooted in the classical musician’s condescension toward jazz or may simply reflect a compositional skill that is less developed than his technical chops. Either way, on this album Marks shines best on his renditions of others’ tunes, even when his tune choices are a bit puzzling: fine arrangements of Joe Zawinul’s “Mercy, Mercy, Mercy” and Harold Faltermeyer’s “Axel F” share space with wedding-band standards like “Summer Breeze” and “Always,” tracks that are only saved from easy listening bathos by the rhythm section’s indestructible funk solidity. On the other hand, he makes a strong case for “Eleanor Rigby” as a soul-jazz vehicle, and even manages to wring some musical interest from yet another recording of the Mission Impossible theme. Not essential, but not bad at all. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi Performers: Donald Nicks – Bass; Keith Marks – Flute; Lou Volpe – Guitar; Pete Levin – Keyboards

Corpora in the Foreign Language Classroom

Corpora in the Foreign Language Classroom

$106.4

The papers published in this volume were originally presented at the Sixth International Conference on Teaching and Language Corpora (4-7 July 2004 Granada, Spain) and reflect the latest developments that have taken place in the field of the teaching applications of text corpora, with a special emphasis on their use in the foreign language classroom. The book is divided into three main sections. The first section sets the scene for what this collection of essays aims to be. It deals with the issue of what corpus linguistics can do not only for the understanding of the nature of language itself but also for so fundamental and miraculous a matter such as language learning and language acquisition. The second section tackles the issues of corpus design and corpus exploitation and provides the reader with a great variety of evidence in favour of corpora exploitation for the building of a successful teaching environment. The final section deals with practical applications of corpora in the foreign language classroom. Although each of the papers here reports particular experiences in very different teaching and learning contexts, as a whole they show that corpora can be used on the spot in a language teaching context by teachers and learners without extensive training in computational tools, and studies of linguistics features can be tailored to specific pedagogic context and learning requirements. The book represents a solid contribution to linguistic studies and language teaching and it is a good example of the diversity of the scientific lines in which corpus linguistics is involved at the present moment.

Foreign Language Learning and Use

Foreign Language Learning and Use

$140

It is commonly believed that foreign language skills improve through social interaction with speakers of the language.  However, there is little research addressing the issue of access to such interaction.  This book explores this issue, examining longitudinal case studies of interaction between language learners and speakers of the target language within their informal social networks.  It looks at the complex social and personal factors that influence language choice. . Kurata reveals that even for motivated learners opportunities to use the target language are limited, and suggests factors that promote language use and opportunities for learning.  She proposes ways around obstacles to opportunities for second language use and second language learning and sets out important implications for language learning in and outside classrooms.  A central implication is the necessity for educators to increase their awareness about their students' self-image as an L2 user. The book features Japanese as the target language under discussion but the results are widely applicable in other language contexts, particularly in English-speaking countries.

Language Function

Language Function

$85

Literacy teaching tends to take a structural approach to language, focusing on auditory products or skills such as sounds, morphemes, words, sentences, and vocabulary. However, new research suggests that the majority of English speakers actually think and learn in visual concepts, and that there is a cultural and linguistic mismatch between auditory teaching methods and the way students think and learn. This has important implications for all educators including those who work with students with neurogenic disabilities, such as autism spectrum disorders and ADHD. In her new book, Dr. Ellyn Lucas Arwood outlines a revolutionary four-tiered model of how a learner acquires language, and suggests ways to impose visual language functions onto an auditory language like English in order to improve learning for both neurotypical learners and those with neurogenic disabilities. Dr. Arwood provides tried-and-tested intervention strategies that work with all levels of ability, giving readers the knowledge and confidence to teach learners to become more literate in a way that raises learners' abilities to think and problem solve. This book takes a fresh look at how language and literacy interact, and will be of interest to educators and special educators, speech and language pathologists, and other professionals who support language learning and development.

Language Matters

Language Matters

$19.95

Is Ebonics really a dialect or simply bad English? Do women and men speak differently? Will computers ever really learn human language? Does offensive language harm children? These are only a few of the issues surrounding language that crop up every day. Most of us have very definite opinions on these questions one way or another. Yet as linguists Donna Jo Napoli and Vera Lee-Schoenfeld point out in this short and thoroughly readable volume, many of our most deeply held ideas about the nature of language and its role in our lives are either misconceived or influenced by myths and stereotypes. Language Matters provides a highly informative tour of the world of language, examining these and other vexing and controversial language-related questions. Throughout, Napoli and Lee-Schoenfeld encourage and lead the reader to use common-sense and everyday experience rather than preconceived notions or technical linguistic expertise. Both their questions and their conclusions are surprising, sometimes provocative, and always entertaining. This thoroughly revised second edition updates the book with a new co-author, and includes new chapters on language and power, language extinction, and what it is linguists actually do. Language Matters is sure to engage both general readers and students of language and linguistics at any level.

The Language of SQL

The Language of SQL

$19.99

An understanding of SQL is necessary for both the Information Systems professionals and other business analysts who need to create reports against data in relational databases. Most SQL texts attempt to serve as an encyclopedic reference on SQL syntax. This approach is counterproductive, since this information is readily available in online references published by the major database vendors. For the beginning user or student, it's more important to focus on general concepts and to offer clear explanations and examples of what the various statements can accomplish. THE LANGUAGE OF SQL allows users to learn SQL as they would learn a foreign language. SQL keywords are presented in a logical progression, from simple to more complex, allowing the reader to gain a sense of accomplishment as they learn new words. There is also an emphasis on statements and strategies pertaining to data retrieval. Readers are led through a sequence of chapters covering SQL syntax, from basic data retrieval to Boolean logic to table joins and subqueries. Final chapters discuss data updates, database design, and strategies for displaying data. Scripts will run in each of the 3 databases covered in the book: Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, and Oracle. The book provides instructions on how to obtain and install free versions of those databases for testing.

A Data Learn the Language

A Data Learn the Language

$8.78

The third album by Florida-based quartet Mercury Program is a small departure, eliminating vocals entirely and adding electronics for the first time to what had previously been a richly acoustic, almost jazzy sound. The band is still centered around Whitney Travisano’s electric piano and vibraphone (guitarist Tom Reno and drummer Dave LeBleu also add vibes to several songs), which gives A Data Learn the Language a cool, mellow feel, like the Sea and Cake reinterpreting their favorite Modern Jazz Quartet sides. The electronics and loops are introduced sparingly, supporting the eight lengthy songs and adding new and interesting textures, but never becoming the center of musical attention. A Data Learn the Language will be of no interest to those who find instrumental post-rock insufferably dull, but it’s consistently melodic, rhythmically varied, and unfailingly listenable. Coctails and Tortoise fans take note. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi Performers: Dave Lebleu – Computers, Vibraphone, Drums; Sander Travisano – Guitar (Bass); Whit Travisano – Vibraphone, Piano (Electric)

Dom learned early to use her body to make much bank–and find an escape from her drug-addicted mother. Disillusioned by the strict faith she was raised with, Moët figures hooking up with powerful men is now the real way to heaven. And streetwise Cristal has a master plan to get the security she never knew as a foster child. To make their dreams come true, these sistahs will go after the East Coast's biggest movers-and-shakers. But between the wild times, one of them will risk everything on a gamble, one will play a player too far, one will take a dangerous chance, and one will face the most difficult choice of all… "A drama-filled, action-packed, page-turning novel of friendship. . . readers will find themselves laughing at moments and crying at others." –The RAWISTAZ Reviewers

Foreign Language Learning with Digital Technology

Foreign Language Learning with Digital Technology

$130

There is an apparent paradox in the fact that while digital technology is endlessly innovating and improving itself as a tool to support teaching and learning, the cognitive process of language learning itself remains perennially the same. However, it is also true that the medium has created new learning opportunities which were not possible before and therefore introduces new elements into the cognitive process of foreign language learning.    The book’s overall aim of examining foreign language learning primarily from the user’s perspective (both teacher and learner) is broken down into 2 underlying questions: How does digital technology support existing foreign language learning needs and processes?   What new learning experiences does it entail for the learner?. More specifically, this book aims to meet the following objectives:. • To situate new insights into the value of digital technology for FL learning within the context of evidence from prior research and of educational policy-making. • To present and examine key pedagogical uses of digital technology in relation to effective foreign language learning by pupils. • To provide an in-depth description of the use of a range of digital media: including PowerPoint, the internet, CMC, and web-based language learning support. • To combine practical ideas for teaching and learning with critical analysis of evidence;. • To provide readers with a basis and ideas for using digital technology and for developing language learning in their own classrooms. • To bring together analysis of technology-focused language learning across different sectors (secondary, university, TEFL) and in three national anglophone contexts (England, Australia and USA).

Phraseology in Foreign Language Learning and Teaching

Phraseology in Foreign Language Learning and Teaching

$158

This book addresses the key role of phraseology in second language acquisition and instruction. It is divided into three main sections: Extracting and Describing Phraseological Units investigates the role played by native and learner corpora in the extraction and description of multiword units, two initial and crucial steps in informing language pedagogy; Learning Phraseological Units deals with the learning aspect, an oft-neglected yet essential dimension of phraseology in second/foreign language pedagogy, this section also addresses issues in new literacies; and Recording and Exploiting Phraseological Units focuses on pedagogical tools, notably monolingual and bilingual dictionaries and textbooks. This stimulating collection presents cutting edge research in the field and identifies major avenues for future theoretical and applied work. It is of particular relevance to researchers and teachers interested in the patterned nature of language.

Letters are tangible language. Joining together in endless combinations to actually show speech, letters convey our messages and tell our stories. While we encounter these tiny shapes hundreds of times a day, we take for granted the long, fascinating history behind one of the most fundamental of human inventions–the alphabet. The heart of the book is the 26 fact-filled “biographies” of letters A through Z, each one identifying the letter’s particular significance for modern readers, tracing its development from ancient forms, and discussing its noteworthy role in literature and other media. We learn, for example, why the letter X has a sinister and sexual aura, how B came to signify second best, why the word “mother” in many languages starts with M, and what is the story of O. Packed with information and lavishly illustrated, Language Visible is not only accessible and entertaining, but essential to the appreciation of our own language.

The Language Police: How Pressure Groups Restrict What Students Learn

$9.89

If you’re an actress or a coed just trying to do a man-size job , a yes-man who turns a deaf ear to some sob sister , an heiress aboard her yacht , or a bookworm enjoying a boy’s night out , Diane Ravitch’s internationally acclaimed The Language Police has bad news for you: Erase those words from your vocabulary! Textbook publishers and state education agencies have sought to root out racist, sexist, and elitist language in classroom and library materials. But according to Diane Ravitch, a leading historian of education, what began with the best of intentions has veered toward bizarre extremes. At a time when we celebrate and encourage diversity, young readers are fed bowdlerized texts, devoid of the references that give these works their meaning and vitality. With forceful arguments and sensible solutions for rescuing American education from the pressure groups that have made classrooms bland and uninspiring, The Language Police offers a powerful corrective to a cultural scandal. The Unfolding Of Language

The Unfolding Of Language

$6.24

‘Language is mankind’s greatest invention – except of course, that it was never invented.’ So begins Guy Deutscher’s fascinating investigation into the evolution of language. No one believes that the Roman Senate sat down one day to design the complex system that is Latin grammar, and few believe, these days, in the literal truth of the story of the Tower of Babel. But then how did there come to be so many languages, and of such elaborate design? If we started off with rudimentary utterances on the level of ‘man throw spear’, how did we end up with sophisticated grammars, enormous vocabularies, and intricately nuanced shades of meaning? Drawing on recent, groundbreaking discoveries in modern linguistics, Deutscher exposes the elusive forces of creation at work in human communication. Along the way, we learn why German maidens are neuter while German turnips are female, why we have feet not foots, and how great changes in pronunciation may result from simple laziness…

Attitudes to Modern Foreign Language Learning

Attitudes to Modern Foreign Language Learning

$140

Drawing on the results of a tri-national comparative survey of secondary pupils' attitudes towards Modern Foreign Language Learning (MFLL), this book illustrates both the importance and nature of learner attitudes and the contribution of comparative education to our understanding of educational issues. Questions considered include:. What is the nature of the pupils’ attitudes to the educational dimensions of learning French, German and English in each country?. To what extent do educational factors influence the pupils’ attitudes to learning each language in each country?. How similar are the pupils’ attitudes to MFLL within and between the three countries?. What judgements can be made about the relative significance of educational and socio-cultural influences on pupil attitudes to MFLL in each country?

Language Universals

Language Universals

$40.43

Languages differ from one another in bewildering and seemingly arbitrary ways. For example, in English, the verb precedes the direct object ('understand the proof'), but in Japanese, the direct object comes first. In some languages, such as Mohawk, it is not even possible to establish a basic word order. Nonetheless, languages do share certain regularities in how they are structured and used. The exact nature and extent of these "language universals" has been the focus of much research and is one of the central explanatory goals in the language sciences. During the past 50 years, there has been tremendous progress, a few major conceptual revolutions, and even the emergence of entirely new fields. The wealth of findings and theories offered by the various language-science disciplines has made it more important than ever to work toward an integrated understanding of the nature of human language universals. This book is the first to examine language universals from a cross-disciplinary perspective. It provides new insights into long standing questions such as: What exactly defines the human capacity for language? Are there universal properties of human languages and, if so, what are they? Can all language universals be explained in the same way, or do some universals require different kinds of explanations from others? Language Universals is unique in starting with the assumption that the best way to approach these and related questions is through a dialogue between a wide range of disciplines, including linguistics, cognitive neuroscience, philosophy, computer science and biology.

Language Misconceived

Language Misconceived

$99.95

Linguistics is important. An understanding of linguistic principles is as essential to the layperson as it is to the language scholar. Using concrete examples from politics, law, and education, this book shows how people misconceive language every day and what the consequences of misconceptions can be. Since the meanings of words are often fuzzy at best, this volume argues for a flexible approach to meaning and definitions, and demonstrates how this approach can help us understand many conflicts. It is an alternative way of viewing and doing sociolinguistics. Language Misconceived: Arguing for Applied Sociolinguistics offers many specific suggestions and guidelines for approaching a linguistic project. The ideas expressed in this book have been class tested for several years. Students enthusiastically appreciate the connections drawn between linguistics and real-life problems. The goal is to help students of sociolinguistics avoid pitfalls that may inhibit research. Language Misconceived: Arguing for Applied Sociolinguistics is intended primarily for graduate and Ph.D. students of linguistics, especially those interested in applying linguistics to fields like politics, law, and education. It may also be recommended to seasoned linguists as well as researchers in communication, sociology, psychology, and education.

The Language of Things

The Language of Things

$8.33

We live in a world drowning in objects. But what do they tell us about ourselves? In The Language of Things , Deyan Sudjic charts our relationship – both innocent and knowing – with all things designed. From the opulent excesses of the catwalk, or the technical brilliance of a laptop computer, to the subtle refinement of a desk lamp, he shows how we can be manipulated and seduced by our possessions. Sudjic delivers an exhilarating insider’s history of design as he introduces us to the world’s most original innovators and reveals the hidden meanings in their work. How did the design of a pistol influence a car? Why did a chair make a cafe the most fashionable place in Paris? What can we learn from a banknote, a police uniform or a typeface? And why can’t any of us decide what size to wear our trousers? In an age when the word ‘designer’ has become synonymous with the cynical and manipulative, Sudjic examines the qualities behind successful design and explores the conflicting tensions between high art and mass production. Brilliant and courageous, The Language of Things defines the visual vocabulary of our time and gives us a powerful new way of seeing the world.

How Deaf Children Learn

How Deaf Children Learn

$21.95

How can parents and teachers most effectively support the language development and academic success of deaf and hard-of-hearing children? Will using sign language interfere with learning spoken language? Should deaf children be placed in classrooms with hearing children? Are traditional methods of teaching subjects such as reading and math to hearing children appropriate for deaf learners? As many parents and teachers will attest, questions like these have no easy answers, and it can be difficult for caring adults to separate science from politics and fact from opinion in order to make informed decisions about how to help deaf children learn. In this invaluable guide, renowned authorities Marc Marschark and Peter Hauser highlight important new advances in scientific and educational research that can help parents and teachers of students with significant hearing loss. The authors stress that deaf children have strengths and needs that are sometimes very different from those who can hear. Consequently, if deaf students are to have full academic access and optimal educational outcomes, it is essential that parents and teachers learn to recognize these differences and adjust their teaching methods to them. Marschark and Hauser explain how the fruits of research conducted over the last several years can markedly improve educational practices at home and in the classroom, and they offer innovative strategies that parents and teachers can use to promote learning in their children. The result is a lively, accessible volume that sheds light on what it means to be a deaf learner and that provides a wealth of advice on how we can best support their language development, social skills, and academic success.

Learn the Hard Way

Learn the Hard Way

$9.32

Four albums into their career, the Copyrights seem to have set up a pattern. Albums one and three, We Didn’t Come Here to Die and Make Sound, were bright, speedy pop-punk in the grand Screeching Weasel tradition, while album two, Mutiny Pop, was a shade harder in edge and darker in tone. The same can be said for Learn the Hard Way, which also introduces just a hint of old-school hardcore in the abbreviated song lengths: nearly half of the 14 songs are in the 90 seconds or less range, with one, “Solid Connex,” getting its point across in half a minute. Aside from that welcome brevity, cranky songs like “Shit’s Fucked” and “Headaches,” and a newly roughened vocal tone from lead singer Adam Fletcher throughout, most notably on the hoarse “Pulse Check,” further move Learn the Hard Way away from the generally sunny tone of 2007′s Make Sound. However, this is still the Copyrights, so the band’s heart remains in crisp, melodic pop-punk delivered with hooky riffs and spunky energy, even on darker-hued material like the somewhat desperate “Switchblades” which, rather than exploding into the expected transcendent fist-pumping final chorus after an atypically long instrumental break, instead builds the tension further with a repeated call and response refrain before cutting off with a dead stop. In this context, a giddy love song like “She Turns It Up” sounds even more welcome than it might otherwise be. ~ Stewart Mason, Rovi

Dictionary Use in Foreign Language Writing Exams

Dictionary Use in Foreign Language Writing Exams

$158

This book provides an in-depth analysis of what happens when intermediate level learners of a foreign language use a bilingual dictionary when writing. Dictionaries are frequently promoted to people learning a foreign language. Nevertheless, teachers often talk about their students’ inability to use dictionaries properly, especially when they write, and this can be problematic. This book paints a comprehensive picture of the differences a dictionary makes and brings out the implications for language learning, teaching, and testing practices. It draws on research in which participants in three studies took writing tests in two test conditions with and without a dictionary. They were also asked what they thought about the two test types. Their performances and opinions were analyzed in a variety of ways. Conclusions from the data highlight some of the practical issues to be kept in mind if we want to help foreign language learners to use bilingual dictionaries effectively when writing.

Educating for Advanced Foreign Language Capacities

Educating for Advanced Foreign Language Capacities

$44.95

Advanced language learning has only recently begun to capture the interest and attention of applied linguists and professionals in language education in the United States. In this breakthrough volume, experts in the field lay the groundwork for approaching the increasingly important role of advanced language learning in the larger context of multilingual societies, globalization, and security. This volume presents both general and theoretical insights and language-specific considerations in college classrooms spanning a range of languages, from the commonly taught languages of English, French, and German to the less commonly taught Farsi, Korean, Norwegian, and Russian. Among theoretical frameworks likely to be conducive to imagining and fostering instructed advancedness in a second language, this volume highlights a cognitive-semantic approach. The theoretical and data-based findings make clear that advanced learners in particular are characterized by the capacity to make situated choices from across the entire language system, from vocabulary and grammar to discourse features, which suggests the need for a text-oriented, meaning-driven approach to language teaching, learning, and research. This volume also considers whether and how information structuring in second-language composition reveals first-language preferences of grammaticized concepts. Other topics include curricular and instructional approaches to narrativity, vocabulary expansion, the demands on instructed programs for efficiency and effectiveness in order to assure advanced levels, and learners' ability to function in professional contexts with their diverse oral and written genre requirements. Finally, the volume probes the role and nature of assessment as a measurement tool for both researching and assessing advanced language learning and as an essential component of improving programs.

How to Learn Golf

How to Learn Golf

$11.99

Talk to any and all golfers, be they Tour professionals or once-a-month country clubbers, and you’ll hear that they want to improve their game in some way. But up until now, most expert books on golf instruction have focused only on the approach advocated by a particular teaching pro or famous player; the authors usually talk about “the golf swing” or “the putting stroke” as if there is only one way to do it — their way. With How to Learn Golf, the first comprehensive guide to contemporary golf instruction, Harry Hurt III will help you become a better golfer by identifying what type of player you really are, and which of the several leading methods are right for you and your golfing goals. Based on Hurt’s sessions with all of America’s top ten instructors, this book helps you choose between the two main types of golf instruction available — error correction, which offers a quick fix for a specific swing flaw, and swing development, where the focus is on building the swing from top to bottom. Hurt provides illuminating detail on the most effective approaches to improving each aspect of your golf game: putting, the full swing, the short game, and the all-important mental game. Hurt also includes a biographical listing of the best golf instructors nationwide and where their expertise lies, so you can determine who may be best suited to your needs. And if you’ve never sought an instructor before or you’ve had problems communicating with yours, there are two handy worksheets: eighteen questions you should ask your teaching pro and eighteen questions your pro should ask you. From beginners and high handicappers to scratch players and Tiger Woods wannabes, golfers of all skill levels looking to take the next step to improving their games need only look to How to Learn Golf.
